Pacific National HORUS Technology Trial

Pacific National is Australia’s largest private rail freight operator, with 700 weekly train services travelling to more than 70 locations on 570 locomotives.
In 2022, 4AI Systems commenced field trials with Pacific National to assess the benefits of early detection and warning of upcoming signals and obstructions to maintain driver alertness and vigilance. The live trial of HORUS demonstrated the technology’s effectiveness to improve driver situational awareness. Findings from this trial have been shared with the wider rail industry. Extending from the success of this trial, 4AI Systems’ Automatic Train Protection solution was tested. EN4CER integrates with existing trackside signalling systems to deliver real-time route and speed information via an in-cab display. Conducted in a closed environment, a highlight of this field testing included EN4CER interfacing with current onboard control systems to automatically brake the train. HORUS and EN4CER proved their potential to use real-time data to reduce the risk of exceeding a limit of authority, and help to mitigate overspeed and potential Signal Passed at Danger (SPAD) events. The trial also assisted in validating operational infrastructure on Queensland’s North Coast rail line.
